Difference of UV Radiation
So what are UV rays?
UV rays stand for Ultraviolet rays, it is a form of energy that is produced by the sun and measured in the Electromagnetic(EM) spectrum. UV rays are invisible to the naked eye, therefore, special equipment is required to measure and detect them. They are separated into 5 different rays; UVA, UVB, UVC, Far UV, and Vacuum UV. UV rays are harmful to the human body as it is a type of radiation.
UV rays are naturally produced by the sun. While UVA and UVB can pass through the ozone layer, UVC, Far UV, and Vacuum UV are normally blocked. Vacuum UV is the most dangerous among the UV rays, followed by Far UV, UVC, UVB, and UVA.
Difference between UV A/B/C
UVC(wavelength 100-280nm) is almost never observed in nature, as it is absorbed and blocked by the ozone layer. Overexposure to UVC may be dangerous, as there are some cases of misinstallation for UV lights that lead to severe damage to human skin and eyes. UVB(wavelength 280-315nm) is normally played as a synthesis of Vitamin D; however, it can lead to harm as well. For example, erythema(sunburn), cataracts, skin cancer, etc. UVB has a longer wavelength than UVC, it can reach the outer layer of human skin(the epidermis). The reason for skin darkening is due to UVB from the sun.
UVA(wavelength 315-400nm) is the longest wavelength among the UV rays but does not mean you should underestimate it. It can penetrate to the middle layer of human skin(the dermis). Long exposure can lead to skin toughness and suppression of the immune system. UVA is mostly used as “indoor sunlight” or black light. Most phototherapy and indoor tanning(tanning beds) use UVA.
Exposure to UV rays can cause disruption of DNA, causing the formation of pyrimidine dimers. It’s a formation of thymine dimer lesions in DNA. The photon causes two consecutive bases on one strand to connect together, destroying the normal base-pairing double-strand structure in the area. This leads to the inactivation of organic molecules such as bacteria and viruses.
